This traditional hymn of praise was written in 1771 by Ignaz Franz, a German Catholic priest as a paraphrase of the Te Deum, a Christian hymn in Latin from the 4th century. Due to its memorable melody and theme, it is one of the most popular hymns in many dioceses around the world.
