Pentecost Sunday - Year A - Pentecost & “Send Us Your Spirit”

This Sunday is Pentecost, the birthday of the Church. Before Pentecost, the Apostles were hiding in fear. Suddenly there was a noise like a strong driving wind, tongues as of fire came to rest on them, they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues, telling of the mighty acts of God. This was the birth of the Church.

The Spirit brought unity by giving the Apostles the gift of being able to speak in different languages. In the second reading (1 Cor. 12:3-13), Paul notes that the Spirit unites us into one Body, the Body of Christ, even though we all have individual spiritual gifts, and the Church is the Body of Christ. In the Gospel (John 20:19-23), Jesus breathes on the Apostles and says: “Receive the Holy Spirit”. By giving them the power to forgive sins, Jesus started the Sacrament of Penance, or confession. So on this Pentecost Sunday, Happy Birthday Church, and Happy Birthday to us!

In honour of these readings, we would like to share our latest video, "Send Us Your Spirit", a contemplative hymn by Dan Schutte that is based on “Veni, Sancte Spiritus,” often referred to as the Golden Sequence. This hymn is perfect for Confirmations, Ordinations and of course, Pentecost!
