14th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A - Come To Me & “I Will Praise You Lord”
In today’s Gospel (Matthew 11:25-30), Jesus Christ invites us to himself in order to exchange our anxiety with serenity. He says to us, ‘Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.’ This is the wisdom that is hidden from the clever and the learned, which is now revealed to the humble.
Our frail humanity is conversant with violence. We often see ourselves within the vicious circle of vices such as jealousy, envy, anger, rivalry. We waste our time and energy maintaining this circle, and it increases the anxiety in us. We engage in revenge rather than showing love and forgiveness. It is difficult for the human mind and heart to escape the vicious circle of violence once entangled with it.
Jesus Christ is inviting us to what he calls the little way that is hidden to the learned and clever. He invites us to imitate his humble desires. Jesus’ desires are focused on those things that can always be shared; an example is love. He is gentle and humble in heart. A gentle and humble heart is serene. Let us come to Jesus Christ today in order to exchange our anxiety with serenity, and for this wisdom, praise him.
In honour of this weekend’s Gospel and psalm, we would like to share our latest video, "I Will Praise You, Lord", a reverent musical setting of Psalm 30 by Roger Holtz, and typically sung after the fourth reading during Easter Vigil.
